Tifft takes on Whynot and East Alabama
Matt Tifft continued his early-season slate over the weekend with a pair of starts at Deep South tracks in his GUNK No. 57 Super Late Model.
On Friday, Tifft was among 45 entries for the Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series-sanctioned House of Hook Showdown at Whynot Motorsports Park in Meridian, Mississippi. Due to a miscommunication, Tifft missed his heat race, relegating him to the rear to start his Last Chance Qualifier on the quarter-mile oval. He finished sixth, but was unable to transfer into the night’s 40-lap, $8,000-to-win feature.
Weather ultimately canceled the second day at Whynot, but Tifft and his team had already elected to get ahead of the storm and traveled east to East Alabama Motor Speedway for the facility's 24-car Schaeffer’s Oil Spring Nationals event on Saturday. Tifft turned in a seventh-place finish in his heat on the 3/8-mile track in Phenix City, Alabama. He rolled off from the 21st spot to start the 53-lap, $10,053-to-win main event and came home 18th, despite being forced to retire early.
